Overview — visiting Canada
Canada's visitor visa is called a Temporary Resident Visa, and it is applied for online through IRCC. The assessment sits on section 179 of the immigration regulations: the officer must be satisfied that you will leave Canada at the end of your authorised stay. Everything in your file — your job, your family, your property, your travel history, your reason for going and your funding — is read through that one lens. Canada is unusually transparent about it; refusal letters actually tick the boxes that concerned the officer, which means a properly analysed refusal is genuinely useful information rather than a dead end. Applications from Pakistan also require biometrics, and a medical examination is only needed in specific circumstances such as longer stays or certain work in health-related fields.
Why visit Canada?
Family reunions
Large Pakistani communities in Toronto, Mississauga, Calgary and Vancouver make family visits the most common purpose.
Genuine natural beauty
Banff, Jasper, the Rockies and the Atlantic coast are the reason most tourists come and the reason most come back.
Safe and welcoming
Canada consistently ranks among the safest countries for travellers, with well-developed halal food and mosque networks in major cities.
Long visa validity
Approved TRVs are commonly issued as multiple-entry and valid for several years or up to passport expiry.
Business and conferences
Trade shows, meetings and supplier visits fall squarely inside visitor activity.

Processing information
IRCC publishes indicative processing times for visitor visas from Pakistan that move constantly with intake volume; they should be treated as a live estimate, not a commitment. Biometrics must be given after the application is submitted, and the clock effectively runs from then. Passport request letters are issued after approval, at which point the passport is submitted for stamping. Peak periods around summer and the winter holidays add to every stage.
General guidance only. We do not promise timelines — no consultant controls them.
Visa validity and stay
Most approved TRVs from Pakistan are issued as multiple-entry, valid for up to ten years or until one month before the passport expires — whichever comes first. The visa gets you to the border; the officer at the port of entry decides your permitted stay, usually up to six months, and may issue a visitor record specifying a different date. Check the stamp before you leave the airport.
General guidance only. Your grant notice or visa is the final word on validity, entries and conditions.
Travel tips for Canada
- Explain where your money came from. A balance that appeared last week without a story is worse than a smaller, older balance.
- Answer the purpose-of-travel question in a dedicated letter — do not leave the officer guessing.
- If you are refused, request the GCMS notes. They tell you exactly what the officer thought.
- Book refundable flights or a reservation only. Canada does not require confirmed tickets before approval.
- Winter is real. If you travel between November and March, plan clothing and internal flights accordingly.
- Carry your invitation, host's contact details and return booking in hand luggage for the port-of-entry officer.
- Travel medical insurance is strongly recommended and is mandatory for the Super Visa.

Canada visit visa — frequently asked questions
How long does a Canada visit visa take from Pakistan?
IRCC publishes an estimate that changes week to week with application volumes. It is genuinely variable — some files are decided quickly, others take months, and biometrics timing affects the start of the clock. We plan every application around the estimate current on the day you apply.
What is the most common reason Canadian visit visas are refused?
Officers most often are not satisfied about ties to the home country, the purpose of the visit, or the financial position. It is rarely one document — it is usually that the file does not explain why a person with your circumstances would come back.
Do I need to show a specific bank balance?
There is no fixed number. You need enough to fund the trip you described, with a credible source. If a Canadian relative is funding you, their financial documents carry the weight instead of yours.
What are GCMS notes and should I get them?
They are the officer's internal notes on your file, obtainable after a decision. For anyone who has been refused, they are the single most useful document in deciding whether to reapply and what to change.
Can my parents apply for the Super Visa instead?
If you are a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, your parents or grandparents may be eligible. It has its own requirements including a minimum income threshold for the child in Canada and mandatory medical insurance.
Do I need a medical examination?
Only in specific cases — typically longer stays or intended activities in health-related settings. Most short visitor applications do not require one unless IRCC asks.
Can I visit Canada if I was refused a US visa?
Yes, and the two are assessed separately. You must declare the refusal honestly. Concealing it causes far more damage than the refusal itself.
Can I work or study on a visitor visa?
No employment is permitted. Short courses of limited duration may be allowed, but anything longer requires a study permit.
