The Schengen area lets you travel across a large part of Europe on one short-stay visa, but the application itself is the least forgiving on this page. You do not choose the embassy — the rules choose it for you. You apply to the country that is your main destination, judged by the purpose and length of stay; if you spend equal time in several, you apply to the country of first entry. Getting that wrong gets the file returned. Every applicant needs travel medical insurance meeting the published minimum cover for the whole area and the whole trip, a full itinerary with accommodation and flight reservations, and financial evidence that matches the trip described. The 90/180 rule then governs the rest of your life as a Schengen visitor: at any moment, you must not have spent more than ninety days inside the area in the preceding one hundred and eighty.

Processing information
Short-stay applications are generally decided within a published number of calendar days from the date the file is accepted, and may be extended where additional documents or scrutiny are required. Appointment availability at the visa centres is the real bottleneck in busy months, particularly for the most popular embassies. Biometrics are collected at the visa centre and, once recorded, may be reused for a period on subsequent applications.

Visa validity and stay
A uniform Type C visa may be issued for single, double or multiple entry. Under the 90/180 rule you may stay a maximum of ninety days in any rolling one-hundred-and-eighty-day period across the whole area, regardless of how many countries you visit. Multiple-entry visas of longer validity may be granted to applicants with a clean, established travel history. Validity is not permission to stay — count your days.

Travel tips for Schengen Countries
- Apply to the correct embassy: main destination by purpose and length, or country of first entry if the stay is split evenly.
- Never buy non-refundable tickets before approval — a reservation is sufficient and is what the embassy asks for.
- Insurance must cover the entire Schengen area and the entire trip, with the required minimum. A cheap policy that fails the cover requirement gets the whole file refused.
- Learn the 90/180 rule properly and count your days. Overstaying by even a few days can cost you future visas.
- Book appointments as early as slots open — for popular embassies the appointment is harder to get than the visa.
- Carry your insurance, hotel bookings and return ticket in hand luggage. The border officer can ask on arrival.
- Trains between cities are faster and cheaper than intra-European flights once you count airport time.

How long does a Schengen visa take?
Files are generally decided within a published number of days from acceptance, extendable where extra scrutiny is needed. The larger practical delay is getting an appointment slot at the visa centre during peak season.
What is the 90/180 rule?
You may spend at most ninety days inside the Schengen area within any rolling one-hundred-and-eighty-day period. It is counted backwards from any given day, not by calendar year — which is why people accidentally overstay.
Is travel insurance mandatory?
Yes. It must cover the minimum required amount, be valid throughout the Schengen area and cover your entire stay including repatriation. This is a hard requirement, not a recommendation.
Can I visit several countries on one visa?
Yes, provided your visa allows the necessary entries and you respect the 90/180 rule. Your itinerary should reflect the route you actually intend to travel.
Do I need confirmed flight tickets?
No — a reservation is enough and is what the embassy expects. Buying non-refundable tickets before a decision is an expensive mistake.
Will I get a multiple-entry visa?
Multiple-entry visas with longer validity are generally reserved for applicants with a clean record of previous Schengen travel. A first-time applicant is usually issued a visa matching the trip applied for.
Can I work on a Schengen visitor visa?
No. Employment is not permitted. Business visitors may attend meetings, conferences and trade fairs but cannot take up work with a European company.
