UK Visit Visa (Standard Visitor) from Pakistan

One visa category covers tourism, family visits, business meetings and private medical treatment — decided on documents, with no interview for most applicants.

  • DecisionOn documents — interview rare
  • Standard stayUp to 6 months per visit

Overview — visiting United Kingdom

The United Kingdom replaced its old separate categories with a single Standard Visitor visa that covers tourism, visiting family, business activity, short courses and private medical treatment. For Pakistani applicants the process is entirely paper-based: you complete the online application, attend a visa application centre for biometrics, and upload a document bundle that an entry clearance officer reads without ever meeting you. That changes the strategy completely compared with the US. Here, your file has to speak for you — every claim you make about your job, your income, your family and your plans must be provable from a document in the bundle. A well-written cover letter that connects those documents into one coherent story is worth more than another twenty pages of statements.

Why visit United Kingdom?

Family and heritage

The UK is home to one of the largest Pakistani communities in the world, and most applications from Pakistan are family visits.

History in walking distance

London, Edinburgh, Bath, York and Oxford deliver centuries of history in compact, walkable cities.

Straightforward for English speakers

No language barrier, familiar legal and commercial systems, and a large Urdu-speaking population.

Business and trade links

Long-established trade ties make the UK a natural destination for meetings, exhibitions and supplier visits.

A base for Europe

Once you have travelled, onward trips to Ireland and Europe become easier to plan.

Top tourist attractions

  • Tower of London and Tower Bridge
  • Buckingham Palace and Westminster
  • The British Museum and National Gallery
  • Edinburgh Castle and the Royal Mile
  • Stonehenge and the city of Bath
  • Lake District National Park
  • Oxford and Cambridge colleges
  • Snowdonia and the Welsh coast
  • Manchester and Birmingham city centres
  • Giant's Causeway, Northern Ireland

Private medical treatment

Treatment at a private UK facility, with correspondence from the clinic and proof of funds.

Short recreational courses

Non-degree courses of limited duration at an accredited provider.

General eligibility

  • A passport valid for the whole of your intended stay
  • A genuine intention to visit for a permitted purpose and leave at the end
  • Enough money to cover travel, accommodation and living costs without working
  • Proof that you can maintain yourself, or that a UK-based host will support you
  • Evidence of ties to Pakistan — employment, business, dependants, property
  • No relevant immigration or criminal history that engages the suitability rules
  • No plan to make the UK your main home through repeated or continuous visits

General guidance only — requirements differ by applicant profile and immigration rules change without notice. We confirm the current position before you apply.

Required documents

  • Valid passport and previous passports showing travel history
  • Online application form and appointment confirmation
  • Recent photograph to specification
  • Bank statements for at least the last six months
  • Salary slips and an employment letter with leave approval, or business documents for the self-employed
  • Tax returns / NTN certificate
  • Property and asset documents
  • Sponsor's invitation letter, passport or BRP copy, proof of status, payslips and bank statements where a UK host is supporting you
  • Proof of relationship — nikah nama, FRC, birth certificates
  • Travel itinerary, flight reservation and accommodation booking
  • Cover letter explaining purpose, funding and intent to return

Your final checklist depends on your purpose of travel and personal circumstances. We confirm it in writing before you start collecting.

Processing information

Standard applications from Pakistan are normally decided within around three weeks of biometrics, but that is a service standard rather than a promise, and volumes in the summer and around Eid and wedding season push it out. Priority services are available at some visa application centres for an additional fee, subject to availability. The passport stays with the visa application centre until the decision is made, so plan around any other travel.

General guidance only. We do not promise timelines — no consultant controls them.

Visa validity and stay

A Standard Visitor visa is usually granted for six months, allowing multiple entries within that period. Long-term visitor visas of two, five or ten years are available for applicants with an established travel history and a genuine ongoing reason to visit; on these, each individual stay is still limited to six months. Continuous or back-to-back visits that add up to living in the UK will be refused.

General guidance only. Your grant notice or visa is the final word on validity, entries and conditions.

Travel tips for United Kingdom

  • Write a cover letter. It is not required, but it is the only place you get to explain your file in your own words.
  • Six months of clean, explainable bank history beats a large sudden deposit every time.
  • If a UK relative is sponsoring you, their documents must show they can actually support you and accommodate you.
  • Never submit a document you have not read yourself. Forged or unverifiable paperwork triggers a ten-year ban.
  • Apply no earlier than three months before travel, and leave at least six weeks before your intended date.
  • Carry your visa, invitation and return ticket in hand luggage — the border officer can still ask.
  • Public transport in UK cities is excellent; an Oyster or contactless card is cheaper than daily tickets.

United Kingdom visit visa — frequently asked questions

How long does a UK visit visa take from Pakistan?

Most standard applications are decided within roughly three weeks of giving biometrics, though peak season adds to that. Priority processing may be offered at an extra fee where the visa application centre has capacity.

How much bank balance do I need for a UK visit visa?

There is no published figure. The requirement is that you can reasonably fund the trip you have described. A ten-day trip with a modest itinerary needs a very different balance from a two-month family visit — and the source of the money matters as much as the amount.

Can my relative in the UK sponsor my visit?

Yes. A UK-based sponsor can provide accommodation and financial support. They will need to supply an invitation letter, proof of their immigration status, their payslips and bank statements, and evidence of your relationship.

Do I need to attend an interview?

Most visitor applicants do not. Applications are decided on the documents submitted, though an entry clearance officer may request an interview in a minority of cases.

Can I extend my stay once I am in the UK?

Extensions of visitor leave are possible only in limited circumstances and are not something to count on. Plan your trip within the six months you are granted.

Will a previous refusal from the UK or another country hurt me?

It has to be declared, and it will be considered. A refusal is not fatal, but hiding one is — non-disclosure is treated as deception and carries far heavier consequences than the original refusal.

Can I do a short course on a visitor visa?

Short recreational or non-degree courses of limited duration at an accredited provider are permitted. Anything longer or leading to a qualification requires a student route visa.

Can I work or claim benefits as a visitor?

No. Visitors cannot take employment, run a business from the UK or access public funds. Business visitors may attend meetings and conferences but cannot do productive work for a UK company.
